Berkley Family Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by the families of their eight children.  H.J. was originally from the community of Juniata in Lincoln County, Kansas, and Paulina was from Hill City, Kansas. Neither of them went to college, but they felt that education is important and encouraged everyone to pursue post-high school education.  H.J. graduated from Beverly Rural High School in just three years and started teaching in 1917. In the fall of 1924, they moved to Tescott, where H.J. took jobs at The Bank of Tescott as a janitor and teller. The James Michael Brierton Scholarship is established to encourage young people to see what they can accomplish in big or small communities when they share their skills and talents.  Mike Brierton came from the very small farming community of Ferris, Illinois.  His family did not have much financial means but allowed their children to explore and develop their avenues of curiosity.  Mike was especially curious about how things worked as well as being very talented in drawing, math, and music.  Those interests drew him to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Spoon River College.  His first job was in Peoria, Illinois as a draftsman designing forklift trucks.  That was his last job in a big city.  He had various engineering jobs, mainly in the agricultural field and smaller communities. His journey eventually brought him to Abilene, Kansas, in 1982 with Abilene Equipment (in the Great Plains Manufacturing building today). In 1984 he started a part-time business providing repair parts for ground support equipment axles which eventually grew into manufacturing complete axles for the ground support business (highway construction equipment, airline support tractors, military trailers).   Even since his death in June 2020, Brierton Engineering continues to thrive with the talented and dedicated employees it has employed for many years.

This scholarship was established for those who are sincere in making a difference in a community, be it large or small.  You do not have to be the smartest or the best in your class; just have a desire to do your best, work hard and keep trying.  A sense of humor helps, too.

Reilly Family Agricultural Scholarship - (1) $3,000

  • Duane D. Reilly purchased the Reilly homestead and farm from his Dad, Tom Reilly, and his uncle, Bill Reilly, in 1950.   He was proud to be a farmer and property owner.

Duane’s dream of a farmer/son farming operation began on February 4, 1953, with the birth of his son, Stephen Duane Reilly.  Steve grew up loving everything about the farm and farming.  He was at his Dad and Grandpa’s side as soon as he could walk.  Steve was not particularly fond of the classroom but was athletic and enjoyed participating in football, wrestling, and track.  He was also active in the Future Farmers of America at Abilene High School.  At an early age, he raised pigs and cattle.  He was an entrepreneurial farmer and predicted the success of soybeans.  He planted his first soybean crop in 1968.  Duane’s dream of a father/son farm operation ended on December 24, 1969, when Steve lost a short battle with cancer.

Duane continued farming the Reilly farm until his retirement in June 2002.  He was always proud of the homesteaded farm, and his only request was that it remains in possession of his heirs. The cropland is currently enrolled in the CRP program, and the pastureland is rented to neighboring farmers.

Duane passed away on September 5, 2015.  The family has established the Reilly Family Agriculture Scholarship Fund to keep the memory of both Duane and Steve Reilly alive while supporting the education of young people who possess similar interests and values.
